The Newmarket Journal stated that he was a stablelad. There was a stableman with Charles Morton at Bedford Lodge Cottage in 1891 who is recorded
as Newmarket born but appears to be too old (1872). His birth registration cannot be found, nor has he been identified on any other census There is just one Robert J Kelly on CWGC list, the soldier above. However no connection with Newmarket has yet been found and at 5' 6" tall, weighing 154 lbs and a chest size of 39 inches it seems unlikely he was a stable lad ...however Born in Douglas, Isle of Man to Robert and Jane KELLY of Douglas Husband of Emmaline KELLY (b.20-4-1880) of 28 Barrack Street, Douglas, he was a dock labourer living with his wife at 10 Queens Street, Douglas in the 1911 census. He enlisted in Douglas, 26th November 1915, went to France 23rd March 1916, was wounded on 25th September 1916 and spent time in hospital in Etaples. Returned to Battalion on 26th October 1916, he was again wounded, in Ypres, on 4th October 1917 and was in hospital in UK for 2 months, until 22nd December 1917 and returning to France on 13th March 1918. He received the wounds from which he died, on 27th April 1918 His pension card records a son, William Robert KELLY, b.14-4-1908. More investigations will be needed to establish this particular name on the war memorial. No connection with Newmarket has been found for any casualty named Robert Kelly |
